Lithium-ion batteries are currently in high demand. These cells, which have high energy density and a long service life, are used in electric cars, notebooks, smartphones, and many other devices. However, these cells are neither considered environmentally friendly nor very safe to use and store.

This is where sodium-ion batteries offer clear advantages. Their production is more environmentally friendly than that of lithium-ion batteries. They can be manufactured more cost-effectively, which also has an impact on the retail price. The cells are more resistant to temperature fluctuations and offer greater safety during use and storage. They are also characterized by high durability and, increasingly, higher energy density. This has made them attractive to the automotive industry, and the first small cars with built-in sodium-ion batteries are already in series production.
